MOSCOW, March 20, 2004. (RIA Novosti). The unsettled crisis in Kosovo poses serious threats to the Balkan peninsular, Russian Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov said at the traditional Saturday meeting held by President Vladimir Putin.

Therefore, the Russian Security Council Secretary believes, it is necessary to work out priority measures, which Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu will coordinate with the leadership of Serbia and Montenegro, and also to elaborate a general approach to the settlement.

According to Igor Ivanov, the Russian Foreign Ministry was for several months preparing Sergei Shoigu's visit to Serbia and Montenegro on the President's instructions, in order to discuss the whole range of relations with that country, in particular, some economic projects.

Today, however, this visit has coincided with the aggravation of the crisis around Kosovo, said Igor Ivanov.
