MOSCOW, March 16, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Chairman of the Duma legislation committee Pavel Krasheninnikov intends to forward a draft law on the ratification of Protocol 6 to the Convention on Human Rights of the Council of Europe, regarding capital punishment.

He said this in a RIA Novosti interview.

According to him, the same committee in the previous Duma supported this draft law too.

"The so-called sixth protocol was discussed in Duma unions and also backed by the United Russia faction," said Mr. Krasheninnikov.

Protocol 6 on abolishing capital punishment to the Human Rights Convention of the Council of Europe was signed in 1983 and took effect on February 21, 1985. By now, it has been ratified by 41 member countries of the Council of Europe.

Russia signed the Protocol in April 1997.
