TBILISI, March 15, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Tbilisi and Batumi must settle their differences immediately, Richard Miles, the American ambassador to Georgia, said at a meeting with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili in Georgia's sea port of Poti on Monday.

The current problems between the centre and the autonomy must be settled as soon as possible to deter the situation from aggravating, the diplomat said after the meeting.

The ambassador said he was trying to help Mr. Saakashvili and Mr. Abashidze (President of Georgia's autonomy of Adzharia) to settle their discords peacefully.

Mr. Miles emphasised that the current crisis with Adzharia was Georgia's internal affair and that the US was not going to interfere directly.

Mr. Miles said the US was just helping the parties resume dialogue.
