YURI GAGARIN COMMEMORATED IN INDIA

NEW DLEHI, March 10, 2004. (RIA Novosti). The first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, whose 70th anniversary was celebrated on March 9, is commemorated in India.

President of Honor of the World Peace Council Romesh Chandra delivered a speech at the commemorating ceremony in the Russian Science and Culture Center in New Delhi.

According to him, Gagarin's space flight in 1961 gave people a different view of their history and a new world outlook based on good-neighborliness.

Soon after the flight the first cosmonaut visited India and met with its Prime Minister Javaharlal Neru, Mr. Chandra said.

In his words, this meeting influenced the consolidation and development of Russian-Indian relations and mutual understanding.

Those events were reflected in the works by renowned Russian photographers exhibited in the Russian Science and Culture Center in New Delhi.
