TBILISI, MARCH 1, RIA NOVOSTI - Giya Jokhtaberidze, son-in-law of Eduard Shevardnadze, Georgia's recent president, is detained on suspected tax evasion. He has been transferred from Prison No. 7, on the Interior Ministry premises, to Detention Prison No. 5 of the Justice Ministry penitentiary department.

Jokhtaberidze, manager and holder of 51% stock of the Magticom, Georgia's largest cell-phone Company, is to spend three months in detention. He is "badly dejected", penitentiary department officers said to Novosti/Georgia news agency.

Detention Prison No. 7, a rat hole without water and toilets, was passed to the Justice Ministry, January last. Jaba Ioseliani, in command of the Mkhedrioni (Knights) paramilitary units, was there under arrest on suspected masterminding an attempt on President Shevardnadze's life, August 29, 1995. The detainee was put to Georgia's central prison hospital, badly ill after his ordeal there.

The Magitcom has appointed a new manager, US national David Lawrence. The US-based Metromedia Co., 49 per cent block holder, approves the appointment, reports Rustavi-2 TV Company.
