DUSHANBE, March 1, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - A Tajik resident was killed by an antipersonnel mine explosion last night on the Tajik-Uzbek border, the press service of the local border guard committee of the republic's government reported on Monday.

The victim was a resident of the Ashtsky district of the Sogdiisky region (420 km northeast of Dushanbe) who died on the spot.

The mine had been planted by Uzbek border guards.

The Uzbek side began mining the Tajik-Uzbek border in August 2000 to prevent Uzbek Islamic militants from illegally crossing the border.

According to the state border guard committee of the Tajik government, 60 civilians died and 70 were wounded over this period.
