ZAGREB, MARCH 1 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian boxers took nine gold medals at the European championship which ended in Pula, Croatia, on Sunday.
As representatives of the Russian team said, Sergei Kazakov (up to 48 kg), Georgy Balakshin (up to 51 kg), Gennadi Kovalev (up to 54 kg), Alexander Maletin (up to 64 kg), Oleg Saitov (up to 69 kg), Gaidarbek Gaidarbekov (up to 75 kg), captain of Russia's national team Yevgeny Makarenko (up to 81 kg), Alexander Alexeyev (up to 91 kg), and superheavyweight Alexander Povetkin became champions of Europe.
More than 300 boxers participated in the competition which was also a qualification tournament for the Athens Olympics.
