SESSION OF INTERSTATE COUNCIL OF EURASIAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY OPENS IN ALMA-ATA

ASTANA, February 27, 2004. (RIA Novosti.) The ninth session of the Interstate Council of the member states of the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC) at the head-of-government level opened on Friday in Alma-Ata.

As the foreign ministry of Kazakhstan has reported, during the session the heads of government of the Community's states will discuss the questions of working out the common stance on the EurAsEC member states' accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In the focus of the session will also be problems of cooperation between EurAsEC member states in the spheres of energy, the customs tariffs and the fundamentals of the legislation of the organization.

The heads of government will exchange information on the economic situation in the Community's countries, will discuss questions of the development of trade, the creation of the common payment system, the elaboration of the single industrial policy and the strategy of investment cooperation, the carrying out of coordinated customs and frontier policies.

The session's participants will also discuss questions relating to the elaboration and implementation of interstate target programs, the sources and schemes of their financing.

Taking part in the Interstate Council's session are acting prime minister of the Russian Federation Viktor Khristenko, prime minister of Kazakstan Danial Akhmetov, the heads of government of Belarus, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, , as well as observers from Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine.
