RUSSIA AND PAKISTAN TO CONTINUE COOPERATION IN COUNTERACTING INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM

MOSCOW, February 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Pakistan will continue cooperation in counteracting international terrorism and other new challenges to international security. As the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Thursday, this issue was in the focus of the session of the special bilateral working group which rounded off the day before in Islamabad. The Russian delegation headed by deputy acting foreign minister Anatoly Safonov included representatives of the Defense Ministry, the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Federal Security Service, the Audit Chamber and the State Committee for Combating Drug Trafficking.

According to the Foreign Ministry's reports, special attention at the session was devoted to issues of rooting out the deep-lying causes of terrorism as well as the interaction of Russia and Pakistan in these directions within the UN framework.

The participants of the working group exchanged their assessments of the terrorist threats in various regions of the world - in Central Asia, in the Caucasus, the Middle East, in Afghanistan and Iraq. The parties stressed that the world community should make further efforts in helping to settle the situations in the crisis spots of the planet.

The Russian participants of the group also held meetings with the top leaders and experts of the interested Pakistani agencies. At the meeting of Anatoly Safonov with the head of the Pakistani Interior Ministry Faisal Hayat an accord was reached on regular exchanges of information relating to extremists and terrorists whose actions pose a threat to the security of the two states.
