KHABAROVSK, FEBRUARY 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian president Vladimir Putin visited the Assumption Cathedral in Khabarovsk, the territorial center in the Far Eastern federal district.

The Cathedral was built in 1886 but destroyed in 1930 "as not architecturally valuable." During the period of the Russian Orthodox Church's (ROC) revival in Russia the Cathedral was included in the plan of restoration of the city's historic part on the initiative of the Kabarovsk ROC diocese. In October 2000, the foundation of the new cathedral was laid at the place of the old one in a solemn atmosphere.

Due to the efforts of the territorial administration, the public and builders, the opening of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin took place in October 2001, during the celebration of the 63rd anniversary of the Khabarovsk Territory. In a year after the solemn consecration, in which metropolitan Sergius of Solnechnogorsk took part, the Cathedral officially began his second life.

After visiting the Cathedral the President talked with the city's residents who asked him to review the "issue of northern pensions because the country's economy already allows this." At the present time, those who worked many years in the North and then returned to the previous place of residence because of the age or for some other reasons, either do not receive or receive the reduced "northern" pension bonuses. Putin promised to resume considering the issue.

One of Putin's interlocutors asked him to pay attention to the fact that "the middle link of the country's administrative staff don't have hold of the Constitution."
