ARMED CLASH IN INGUSHETIA; ONE TERRORIST KILLED

NAZRAN, February 23, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - In the Malgobeksky district of Ingushetia (a republic in the North Caucasus bordering on Chechnya), when policemen asked the strangers to show their documents, three malefactors opened fire at them; one of the attackers was killed, RIA Novosti was told in the Interior Ministry of Ingushetia.

According to the data of the Interior Ministry, at the village of Novy Redant, the policemen stopped a Volga car moving from Chechnya to check the driver's and passengers' documents. Quite unexpectedly, fire from automatic weapons was opened at the militiamen.

The return fire killed one of the passengers; the driver of the car was detained. However, the third bandit managed to escape. When checking the car the policemen found a Stechkin pistol and seven hand grenades.

The investigation is underway, and the disappeared bandit is being searched for.
