ASHKHABAD, February 18, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Viktor Panov) -- President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov and St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko on February 18 signed an agreement between the St. Petersburg administration and Turkmenistan.

The agreement envisages carrying out joint investment programs in transport, fishing and supply of mining and gas producing and gas processing equipment to Turkmenistan.

"St. Petersburg may get from Turkmenistan fairly big contracts for urban industrial facilities, including those manufacturing power-plant equipment," Matviyenko said. She pointed out that this implied inviting St. Petersburg organizations for reconstructing and updating the existing electric power stations.

"Apart from that, Turkmenistan could place orders for manufacturing in St. Petersburg equipment for oil and gas producing industries," Matviyenko said.

"Having signed a framework agreement on the main areas of cooperation, we have paved the way for businessmen," the St. Petersburg governor said.
