KREMLIN URGES TO STEP UP EFFORT AGAINST TAX CRIMES

MOSCOW, February 13 (RIA Novosti) - A senior Kremlin official has urged the Interior Ministry to step up the effort against tax crimes across the country.

Last year, law enforcement bodies sent to courts 10 times fewer tax evasion cases than in 2002, Viktor Ivanov, deputy chief of Kremlin staff, said at an extended meeting of the Interior Ministry's board on Friday. The quality of inquiries into such cases also leaves much to be desired, added Mr Ivanov.

Russia is a country with a poor tax paying discipline, while the relative crime detection rate is rather low. "Society and loyal tax payers cannot be happy about this situation," said the Kremlin official. Tax offenses are regarded as grave crimes in developed countries, he noted.
