MOSCOW, February 5 (RIA Novosti correspondent Dmitry Panovkin) - Libya's joining the Chemical Weapons Convention is an important practical step on the way to banning the use of chemical weapons throughout the world and strengthening the regime of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East and in Africa, the Russian foreign ministry's press and information department told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

"Moscow perceived this event with satisfaction and considers it as a confirmation of the recent statements made by Tripoli about the renunciation of the development and production of WMDs, including chemical weapons," the report says.

"Russia believes that the participation of Tripoli in the Convention will serve as a positive example for all countries that have not become its members so far," the foreign ministry stressed.

The Chemical Weapons Convention came into force for Libya on February 5.
