SENATOR MARGELOV: RUSSIA WILL FOLLOW G8 PATTERN OF GLOBAL RELATIONS

WASHINGTON, February 4, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Vasily Voropayev) - Russia will follow the G8 pattern of international relations, in other words, it will "take into account the processes of globalisation, accompanied by regionalisation and fragmentation". This statement was made by head of the international committee of the Federation Council (the Russian parliament's upper chamber) Mikhail Margelov at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington on Wednesday.

According to the official, the priorities of Russia's foreign policy will include the whole of the post-Soviet space.

Margelov stressed Russia's interest in developing relations with the European Council as "a natural partner on the continent".

While speaking on Russo-American relations, the head of the International Committee of the Federation Council underlined that "Russia will retain partnership with the US as regards problems of common concern". At the same time, the senator wished "the US were more eager to meet Russia half-way".
