MOSCOW HAILS NEW STEP TOWARDS RESTORATION OF SOMALIA STATEHOOD

MOSCOW, February 3, 2004. (RIA Novosti) -- The adoption of amendments to the New Transitional Charter of Somalia is a new step towards the restoration of its statehood, the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry says in a communique.

The declaration, containing amendments adopted by all the Somali leaders to the Transitional Federal Charter, was inked in the Kenyan capital Nairobi during the on-going national reconciliation conference in Somalia.

"Moscow believes that in this way a new step has been made on the road of Somali society towards accord and restoration of statehood and expresses the hope that questions of forming the leading structures of the renascent Somali state will be resolved in the near future," says the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Somali leaders signed the accord to form a transitional parliament, The Transitional Federal Party, on January 29th. It intends the formation of a transitional parliament of 275 deputies for a five-year term.
