ST.PETERSBURG, JANUARY 30 (RIA NOVOSTI-NORTHWEST CORRESPONDENT ANNA NOVAK) - The idea of building a modern autobahn to link Moscow and St.Petersburg evokes a lively interest, the latter's governor Valentina Matvienko said at the Friday conference on improving and developing the municipal road economy before 2008.

"The president has set us the goal of building a modern St.Petersburg-Moscow motorway. The idea has evoked a lively interest and Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov has given it a backing," Matvienko said.

To her, there are companies interested in building the motorway. "There are Western companies ready to undertake the financing. There are also specialized European companies with an experience in building such roads and they are ready to make heavy investments," Matvienko continued.

For St.Petersburg a new motorway would be a tremendous boon, she said.

Matvienko has instructed managers in the city administration to work out this matter with the Russian Transportation Ministry.
