MOSCOW, January 29 (RIA Novosti) - The United Nations expects Russia to increase its participation in the UN humanitarian programs in connection with economic improvements in Russia, the UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Jan Egeland told a press conference in Moscow on Thursday.

According to him, in 2003 Russia rendered humanitarian assistance to ten countries, mainly in cases of natural disasters.

Russia is rightfully considered one of the best countries in this respect, as it can timely and rapidly deploy rescue teams and field hospitals, Egeland noted.

In 2003 Russia was rendering food assistance mainly within the UN Food Program, he added.
