MOSCOW, January 29 (RIA Novosti correspondent Viktor Panovkin) - Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov has noted the UN's pronounced contribution to the North Caucasus settlement.

"The assistance of the UN system is an essential contribution to the Russian government's and international organization's efforts to settle the situation in Chechnya," the minister said, as opening negotiations with Jan Egeland, Humanitarian Coordinator (Emergency Relief coordinator) and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

"We are grateful to your department for the efforts to solve humanitarian problems of the North Caucasus population," said Ivanov.

The minister continued that he had met Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov. "We discussed settlement in the Chechen republic, in particular, the program to restore education with UNESCO's help," said Ivanov.

Jan Egeland in turn stressed that the North Caucasus was an important region. Better future and security in Chechnya are not a distant prospect, he said.
