PARIS, January 23, 2004. /RIA Novosti/. UNESCO promises wide support for sports and health programs in Russia, Chairman of the Russian State Sports Committee Vyacheslav Fetisov told RIA Novosti on Friday following his meeting with UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura.

"We are trying to give more attention to the health of our children, Russia's future. We cannot build a healthy economy and strong country without a healthy generation," Fetisov stressed.

According to him, UNSECO entirely shares this position and efforts on the assistance to most unprotected children's categories. The UNESCO director general promised to support Russia and share UNESCO's experience in this sphere.

Koichiro Matsuura also backed Russia's initiative to hold an international action "Sports against Terrorism".

"We believe that sportsmen cannot neglect such a serious problem as counter-terrorism. Many sport stars have supported our initiative and now it has found UNESCO's understanding. This is highly important," stressed the chairman of the Russian State Sports Committee.
