MOSCOW, January 22, 2004. / RIA Novosti correspondent /. At its Thursday session, the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Russia has established the procedure for verifying voters' signatures collected in support of candidates for the presidency in this country.

The CEC resolution on this issue points out that signatures will be checked according to the results of a "random sampling of signature lists" carried out by the CEC working group.

This sampling will be made with the use of the random numbers generator. All in all, the working group will check 600,000 signatures out of the 2 million to be submitted by each candidate for president.

If the number of incorrect and invalid signatures revealed during the check accounts for 25 or more percent of their total number, they will be checked over again, the resolution reads.

Candidates for president should submit voters' signatures in their support by 6 p.m. Moscow time, January 28. The Central Election Commission should check the signatures within 10 days. Thus, by February 8, the list of candidates for the presidency will be finally compiled.
