EARTHQUAKE HITS RUSSIA'S FAR EAST

VLADIVOSTOK, January 17. /RIA Novosti correspondent Veronika Perminova/. An earthquake broke out in the Amur Region of Russia's Far East near the border with China. Seismologists registered a shock of force 3 to 4, Richter scale at 5 hours 9 minutes, local time. The epicenter was 127km from the city of Zeya. According to preliminary information, no victims and no destruction have been registered.

A considerable part of the region is in an area of increased seismicity. For this reason a plan of effecting a federal program "Seismic Safety of Russia's Territory" was devised in the region recently. The plan, which is to be fulfilled until 2010, provides for work to make various facilities "earthquake-resistant".
