The scholar expressed this opinion in an interview with RIA Novosti on Tuesday, commenting on a potential resignation of president Rolandas Paksas - the first in the post-Soviet environment crisis of the democratic system.
Impeachment to the president is "a political crisis but not a crisis of state administration or a crisis of the existing system," he stressed.
Speaking about Russian-Lithuanian relations in the light of the current events, Makarenko noted that "the crisis will not have global consequences". Although, in his words, the fact that a Russian businessman is involved in the scandal will allow some Lithuanian politicians "to play the anti-Russian card".
The main accusation against Paksas is that in his election campaign he used the funds provided to him by businessmen with a shady past. The main financial sponsor of Paksas was businessman Yuri Borisov, a Russian citizen, to whom, as a sign of gratitude, the president granted "as an exception" Lithuanian citizenship.
