TBILISI, January 9, 2004. /RIA Novosti correspondent/. The head of the Interior Ministry of Adzharia (an autonomous republic within Georgia) has said that reactionary forces are threatening the stability of the region.

"We have intelligence that reactionary forces are trying to make their way into the territory, threatening stability in Adzharia," Dzhemal Gogitidze, Interior Minister of the Adzharian autonomy, told reporters.

Gogitidze compared the situation in Adzharia with things that happened early in 1990 during the civil war in Georgia.

"The situation in Adzharia bears a resemblance to the early 90s. Now as then, all sorts of adventurers are trying to get into the region and destabilise the situation," said the minister.

He supported the introduction of a state of emergency in the republic. The leadership adopted quite a logical and absolutely correct decision," Gogitidze said.

According to him, preventing measures are being enacted throughout Adzharia's territory. As an example he named the detention of activists of the Kmara youth organisation. "A search in their flat produced fire arms, drugs and anti-government flyers," Gogitidze said.
