An exhibition showcasing the winning works from the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest, organized by Rossiya Segodnya International News Agency, opened in South Africa's Johannesburg.

This exhibition is part of the South African tour of the photo contest, organized by the Rossiya Segodnya media holding under the patronage of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO. The show will run through November 29 at The Market Photo Workshop.

The exhibition in Johannesburg, featuring almost 50 works, includes the striking series of pictures Migrants in Belgrade by the winner of the 2017 Grand-Prix, Alejandro Martínez Vélez (Spain); the elegant picture Selfie Culture by Jelena Jankovic (Serbia), sports chronicles of artistic gymnastics, one of the most beautiful sports, as captured by Alexei Filippov (Russia), the portrait category’s Candy Floss Lady by Tabyldy Kadyrbekov (Kyrgyzstan) and many others.

The most memorable photos include works by African winners of the contest including a photo of Phandulwazi Jikelo (1st place, Top news. Single) from South Africa, who captured a protest in the city of Grabouw, near Cape Town, and everyday life in Nairobi in the work of Kevin Midigo (2nd place. Top news. Single) from Kenya.

Director of Rossiya Segodnya’s Integrated Directorate of Photography Alexander Shtol said in his video message to the ceremony’s guests and participants: “One of the goals of the Andrei Stenin Contest is to discover young and talented photographers in the world. I hope we will receive many submissions from young photographers from South Africa and other African countries and, hopefully, see them among the winners next year.”

Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to South Africa Mikhail Petrakov attended the opening ceremony. He noted that “The Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest has become one of the leading global platforms for young photographers. I am sure that this exhibition will bring new young talents from various countries to promote, among other things, Russia-South Africa ties, which have just marked their 25th anniversary this year.”

The exhibition is part of an international tour by a famous international press photo contest for young photographers. The exhibition in Johannesburg is supported by the project partner, Independent Media.  The goal of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest is to support young photographers and raise public awareness of modern photography and its purpose. The competition gives an opportunity to talented, sensitive and open-minded photographers to draw public attention to the events around us. The contest is organized by Rossiya Segodnya under the auspices of the Russian Federation Commission for UNESCO.

The contest’s 2017 international partners include: Al Mayadeen TV,  Shanghai United Media Group (SUMG) and ICRC.
