As Germans are going to the polls this weekend, they are deciding who will be the new head of the government, since Angela Merkel announced she wasn't running for the office, stepping down after 16 years.
Angela Merkel occupied the post of chancellor in 2005, becoming the first woman to lead the German government. During her four terms, Merkel has faced tough challenges, including a global recession, influx of migrants on the EU's borders, and, finally, the coronavirus pandemic.
Sputnik has selected the best photos of the outgoing chancellor, showing the most remarkable moments of Merkel's long and eventful political life.
