RUSSIAN HACKERS SNATCH 3 MILLION DOLLARS FROM BRITISH BUSINESS

MOSCOW, April 4 (RIA Novosti) - The investigation committee at the Russian Interior Ministry is winding up investigation of the criminal case on Russian hackers' attack at the British on-line office Canbet Sport Bookmakers, the daily Kommersant reports.

According to investigators, hackers have also done damage to some other firms, totaling three million dollars.

Accusations have been filed to Denis Stepanov of St.Petersburg, Ivan Maksakov of Saratov, unemployed Timur Arutchev and Maria Zarubina of Pyatigorsk. Maksakov has admitted fully guilty and is now found under recognizance not to leave Saratov. Stepanov is kept in a pre-trial detention center in Moscow. Supposed organizers of the crime Arutchev and Zarubina are on the federal wanted list.

In 2003 the Canbet Sport Bookmakers site was put under DoS-attacks. As a result, clients of the company turned to other bookmakers and it was daily loosing up to 200,000 dollars. Blackmail hackers demanded the transfer of 40,000 dollars to a Latvian bank. Britishers have many times transferred the money but attacks on the site continued.

The UK National Hi-Tech crime Unit (NHTCU) has turned for help to Russian colleagues. The addresses of computer offenders and their providers have thus been established.

The suspects have faced accusations under the articles providing for up to 15-year imprisonment for extortion by and organized group and the use of harmful programs.
