MOSCOW, March 17 (RIA Novosti) - Passing control of the town of Jericho (in the West bank of the Jordan river) to the Palestinian authorities is an important and needed step towards the fulfillment of the Israeli-Palestinian agreements, says the commentary of the Press and Information Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"It deems that an important and needed step towards the grassroots fulfillment of the agreements reached at the Israeli-Palestinian summit in Sharm al-Sheikh last February 8 has been taken", the commentary reads.

Moscow hopes that the sides will continue full-scale realization of all the obligations assumed. In this context, "the priority goals for the Palestinian National Authority are the efficient ending of terrorist acts, continuation of reform of the power structures and, for Israel, the liberation of Palestinian prisoners and the withdrawal of troops from other Palestinian populated places, including the removal of block posts, as well as measures to improve the socio-economic situation on the Palestinian lands", the commentary reads.

"This is called upon to create conditions for the resumption of full-fledged political process in keeping with the Roadmap", the commentary stresses.

As reported earlier, on March 16 after the talks with the Palestinian side the Israeli army passed to the PNA authorities limited control of the town of Jericho and the adjacent village Odja.

Within the framework of the reached agreements, going to and coming out of the town, as well as transport communication with Ramallah have been facilitated. The Israeli and Palestinian power structures have arranged coordination in the ensurance of security in the Jericho district.
