UKRAINE IN TWO MINDS OVER TREATMENT OF BEREZOVSKY

KIEV, March 15 (RIA Novosti) -- Ukraine's Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko said that a political decision should be taken over the matter of detaining Russian entrepreneur Boris Berezovsky if he gets an entry visa to Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian Fifth Channel TV station.

"Ukraine abides by two controversial conventions-- one on extradition of criminals, presupposing that Berezovsky should be extradited, and the second on protection of political refugees, whereby Ukraine should extradite him by no means," said Lutsenko.

Since Russia and Ukraine maintain a treaty on the extradition of criminals, Ukraine's ministry of the interior might be in a spot. Then the ministry of foreign affairs ought to take a political decision.

Ukraine's consular service boss Nikolai Tochitskt said this Tuesday that Ukraine was considering the issue of visa for Russian entrepreneur Boris Berezovsky who applied at the migration service a week ago. No precise date of this visit is specified; this application is undergoing routine instances," said Tochitsky.

It was in 2002 that Russia placed Berezovsky on a wanted list, charging him with grave fraud with office misuse.

In 2003, Great Britain granted Berezovsky political asylum.
