KIEV, March 5 (RIA Novosti) - The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's office is reporting pressure on investigators of the Georgi Gongadze murder case. "In trespassing Ukraine's Constitution and laws, biased pronouncements are made to accuse particular persons of the crime, and their urgent arrest is demanded. Some call even to detain the witnesses so as to protect them," the top prosecutor's press service says in a statement circulated today, as quoted by Novosti/Ukraine news agency.

Such moves and pronouncements by certain political activists and other persons boil down to pressuring the investigation, point out the Prosecutor General's Board experts and detectives who are delving in the muckraking journalist's murder case.

"It is downright illegal to interfere with the work of those bodies. Ukraine's Constitutional Court said so in its verdicts on a number of occasions," says the statement.

"Certain parliamentarians, political activists, newsmen and self-styled experts are making ungrounded and irresponsible pronouncements to accuse foremost persons on the top prosecutor's office and the detective team.

"Despite all that, the team goes on detecting the Gongadze murder. The detection will go on strictly within the limits of the acting Ukrainian criminal procedural legislation.

"Whoever was involved in the crime will be punished in compliance with the law. No arrests and indictments will be made proceeding solely from political slogans and ungrounded statements," says the top prosecutor's office.
