YASTRZHEMBSKI: OSCE NEEDS DEEP-GOING REMAKING

MOSCOW, December 23 (RIA Novosti) - The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe is in need of serious reorganisation to meet the interests of all of its members, Russian presidential aide for relations between Russia and the European Union Sergei Yastrzhembski has said.

"It is not accidental that Russia and other members of the OSCE are bringing up the question of overhaul, remaking of the organisation so that its activities meet the interests of all the states, not only a group of them", Sergei Yastrzhembski told the press conference in Moscow.

He said that Moscow believes a bias has of late taken place in the OSCE activity: it has been refocused on processes under way on the post-Soviet space. "It often appears as a professor, mentor lecturing a young-democracy nation on how to conduct elections in a country", Sergei Yastrzhembski said.

He noted that the OSCE was taking shape as a body with global European interests and universal values. "It must remain as such", he stressed.

"It is impossible for us to have a biased, lop-sided organisation for which only a part of the European continent exists", the presidential aide said.

What's more, the OSCE should not replace other European structures, such as PACE, he said.
