MOSCOW, Dec 4 (RIA Novosti) - The international community should mobilize additional efforts for the settlement in Iraq, Russian Foreign Ministry official spokesman Alexander Yakovenko told RIA Novosti on the eve of a working visit to Moscow by head of the Iraqi interim government Ayad Alawi.

"We back the necessity to mobilize additional efforts of the international community to contribute to the Iraqi settlement, including with account for decisions of the recent international meeting on Iraq in Sharm-el-Sheikh," said Mr. Yakovenko.

In his words, the Russian and Iraqi sides discuss settlement issues in Iraq, which "is living through a critical stage of its history."

The Russian diplomat stressed that Russia was interested in that country gaining peace and stability, preserving unity and territorial integrity.

"By our conviction, this can be achieved only through the attainment of national accord and progress of political process, aimed at establishing a democratic state, which would ensure the rights of all Iraqi citizens, regardless of nationality and faith," said Mr. Yakovenko.

In his words, a very important landmark on the way to reach this goal will be the general elections to the Transitional national assembly.

Moscow and Baghdad are discussing the issue of expanding Russian participation in the post-crisis rehabilitation of Iraq, Mr. Yakovenko added.

"The two sides are discussing the issue of expanding Russian participation in the post-crisis rehabilitation of Iraq, are outlining the priority directions and specific joint projects to restore Iraqi economy and social infrastructure, including with account for earlier reached agreements," he said.

In his words, Russia and Iraq are interested in preserving and developing the relations of traditional friendship and mutually acceptable cooperation that have long linked our nations.

The working visit of Ayad Alawi to Moscow is to take place on December 6-8. Speaking Thursday to deputies of the Interim national assembly of Iraq, Mr. Alawi said he intended to discuss in Moscow the issue of Iraqi debts to Russia, as well as oil and gas cooperation.
