RUSSIA, INDIA PLEDGE TO EXPAND TRADE IN HI-TECH PRODUCTS

NEW DELHI, December 3 (RIA Novosti) -- Russia and India will expand the trade in hi-tech products, Vladimir Putin stated.

"During the talks with the Indian leadership, we set another joint goal, to expand the trade in hi-tech products, to improve forms and methods of cooperation in investment sphere, and to strengthen the scientific-technical partnership in such priority areas as space exploration, information technologies and communications," said the Russian President speaking at the Jawaharlal Neru Memorial Foundation.

According to Mr. Putin, Russian-Indian agreements signed during the current visit are aimed at successful achievement of this goal.

Mr. Putin called for a "multi-polar world of high technologies."

In his opinion, it would help to balance the evolution of human civilization.

"Russia and India both have an enormous potential to conduct joint development of advanced technologies, including alternative technologies," Mr. Putin believes.

"I think that the future of our relations is in the development of the full-scale scientific and technical partnership," he said.

Mr. Putin believes that a coordinated entry of Russia and India on the global weapons market is possible.

"Russian-Indian cooperation in the military-technical and military spheres has acquired a new quality during the last ten years," the Russian President emphasized.

According to Mr. Putin, Russia is not simply supplying India with armaments, military equipment and new technologies. "We are getting involved more and more in the joint development of new armaments," he stressed.

"In the future, we might consider a coordinated entry of Russia and India on the global weapons market," Mr. Putin stated.

He also said that the Armed Forces of both countries acquire new experience of joint exercises. "Last year's joint Navy exercises in the Indian Ocean are a good example of that," the Russian President said.

At the same time, he pointed out, Russia's assistance provided to the Indian Armed Forces is not aimed against third countries.

"It is important that this assistance serves the goal of strengthening the security not only of India, but also of other countries," the head of the Russian state underlined.

He said that strategic shipping lanes from the Persian Gulf to East Asia, China and Japan pass along the shores of India.

"The protection of energy supply lines in a large region of the world and the countering of the terrorist threat in the sea are all part of the common security strategy adopted by various world powers and Asian countries in particular," Vladimir Putin emphasized.

The Russian President called for inclusion of India in all plans for ensuring security on shipping lines in the Indian Ocean. Without its active participation, these plans will be limited and inefficient, Mr. Putin believes.
