MOSCOW, December 1 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry regards groundless claims against UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as attempts to discredit the organization on the whole. This is mentioned in the commentary of the Foreign Ministry's information and press department on the discussion by western media of abuses within the framework of the UN Oil for Food program.

"These claims against the UN Secretary General were caused by fact that Kofi Annan's son worked for and received money from some company involved in the humanitarian program," the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement runs.

"This is an obvious attempt to discredit the UN activities on the whole," the document says.

According to the Foreign Ministry, "someone is discontented with the growth of the UN international role and attempts are made to make the UN leadership be more compliant, especially, in the Iraqi settlement issues".

The attempts "to add fuel to the fire" are fraught with serious consequences for the Iraqi settlement and the situation in the Middle East, the commentary reads.

"Russia is convinced that today the international community needs a common approach to the solution of this difficult problem," the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded.
