VIENTIANE, November 29 (RIA Novosti, Arseny Oganesyan) - On the first day of his official visit to Laos, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov signed the act on Russia's accession to the Bali Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (1976).

This treaty is a legal base of relations between ASEAN member-states. Joining the treaty, Russia assumes responsibility to abstain from any actions threatening political and economic stability of ASEAN countries.

The fact that Russia, as well as ASEAN member-states, China, India, Japan and South Korea, joined the Bali treaty adds strategic profundity to Russia's relations with Southeast Asian countries and create all the necessary conditions for the development of Russia-ASEAN relations.

However, Russia's economic ties with this perspective region fall behind the intensity of Russian-Asian political dialogue. New projects are being launched to improve this. Among them is Russian-Indonesian cooperation in the atomic energy sphere. Moreover, in the near future a Malaysian astronaut is likely to be trained in Russia.
