RUSSIA AND PORTUGAL UNCONDITIONALLY CONDEMN TERRORISM

LISBON, November 23 (RIA Novosti) - The condemnation of terrorism should be unconditional and devoid of double standards, says the Russian-Portuguese statement in connection with the visit of the Russian president to Portugal.

Terrorism should not be identified with certain cultures, communities or religions. In this connection, an effective dialogue between different confessions and civilisations deems extremely important, the document says.

By their actions world-wide terrorists set themselves against civilised society, it goes on to say.

Russia and Portugal have confirmed their firm resolve to apply a joint effort to the struggle against terrorism and recognised the United Nations' leading role in this struggle, particularly that of the Security Council's Counterterrorist Committee.

The global nature of the terrorist threat is a confirmation that security is inseparable in the present-day world. This evil can be coped with by only acting in solidarity and on the multilateral basis within the framework of the present legislation, protecting the human rights and the basic freedoms, the statement says.

The sides are interested in the strengthening of cooperation (with third countries) in opposing the new threats and challenges to security, international terrorism, illegal drug traffic, transnational organised crime, the statement says.

Russia and Portugal think it important further to development military cooperation in line with the existing bilateral agreements, the document says.

The Russian Federation and Portugal reaffirm the desire to strengthen strategic partnership by full embodiment of the four common environments - the economy, external and internal security, science, education and culture, the statement continues.

Russia and Portugal confirm their readiness within the framework of the UN, OSCE and the Council of Europe to do their share in efficient multilateral cooperation towards the strengthening ofsecurity in Europe and successful overcoming of critical situations, the statement says.
