MOSCOW, October 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin asked State Duma and Federation Council Speakers Boris Gryzlov and Sergei Mironov to begin consultations with Ukrainian parliamentarians on the introduction of dual citizenship between Russia and Ukraine.

"This time the proposal was forwarded by the Ukrainian side. This issue should be thoroughly considered by both countries," the head of state stressed.

"I would like you to contact your Ukrainian counterparts next week and start working at the professional level," Vladimir Putin said.

Moreover, this issue should be widely discussed in Russia, he added.

According to the President, during his recent visit to Ukraine, the Ukrainian President, Prime Minister and people asked him about the dual citizenship.

"We have special relations in this sphere with Belarus, not with Ukraine," Mr. Putin said. In his words, experts have different viewpoints on this issue and a rather complicated attitude to the problem of dual citizenship.

"However, we should react to Ukraine's proposal and reconsider this issue with account for special relations between our countries. Russia and Ukraine were parts of one state for centuries and have much in common in ethnic, cultural and language spheres. We should take into account a great number of relationships, mixed marriages, economic demands, cooperation between our enterprises, and advantages of integration for the future of our countries," Vladimir Putin emphasized.

This problem can be solved if most people support this proposal and will be ready to promote its implementation, he noted.

In this connection, the head of state asked the speakers to express their own attitudes to this issue and to start consultations with counterparts from the Ukrainian Supreme Rada.
