RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE OPENS IN TAJIKISTAN

KABUL, October 18 (RIA Novosti) - The Defence Ministry of Afghanistan believes that the opening of a Russian military base in Tajikistan will prompt the efficiency of combating new threats, such as drug traffic, Lieutenant-General Azimi, official spokesman for the Afghan Defence Ministry, told journalists on Monday.

Opening of the Russian military base poses no threat to Afghanistan, he said. "We think that today's Russia has no unfriendly plans on Afghanistan", the Afghan general said.

The RIA Novosti correspondent reports from Kabul that it is actively discussing the opening of the base in Tajikistan. Actually every leading Afghan newspaper carries such materials.

On Saturday, October 16, the Russian and Tajik defence ministers Sergei Ivanov and Sherali Khairulloev undersigned the intergovernmental agreement on the make-up and table of organisation of the Russian military base in the Republic of Tajikistan.
