EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT VISITS SOUTH CAUCASUS

TBILISI/YEREVAN, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - European Commission President Romano Prodi is to discuss with the Georgian authorities further rapprochment of this South Caucasian Republic with the European Union and the expansion of the EU and EC roles in conflict settlement in Georgia.

Romano Prodi is making a trip over the South Caucasus. He has already visited Baku and will head for Armenian capital Yerevan on Saturday night.

"We consider Georgia and South Caucasus's integration in European structures. We shall talk about the European Initiative, which Georgia has joined in a very short time," Mr. Prodi told journalists. "It is very important to form a common plan of further cooperation between Georgia and the European Union," Romano Prodi noted.

According to the Georgian State Chancellery, the EC President is to discuss political and economic relations within the framework of bilateral partnership and cooperation agreements with the EU.

During the visit to Yerevan, Mr. Prodi will meet with Armenian top officials and Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, the press service of the European Commission's mission in Yerevan reported.

The talks will focus on the European neighborhood policy and bilateral issues.

"Mr. Prodi will insist on reforms and conflict settlement in the South Caucasus," the press service said.

This is the closing visit to the South Caucasus by Romano Prodi as the EC President.
