RUSSIA COMES OUT FOR RESUMPTION OF FIVE-SIDED TALKS ON TRANSDNIESTRIA

MOSCOW, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia sees no alternative to direct talks on the Transdniestrian problem, said the press and information department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"Dialogue and compromises are the only civilized solution of any conflicts," the Russian Foreign Ministry said commenting on Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin's refusal to directly negotiate with Tiraspol.

The recent aggravation s in the region, economic blockade and refusal of direct contacts is a result of the last year's missed possibilities when the sides were close to the coordination of Transdniestria's status and parameters of the single state, the ministry noted.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Transdniestrian conflict began in the late 1980s and only Russia's determination prevented fratricidal bloodshed in 1992 when the Chisinau-Tiraspol conflict reached its peak.

"Since then Russia's participation in the peacekeeping operation helped maintain peace and stability in the region and our intermediary efforts promoted political settlement of the conflict," the Foreign Ministry stressed.

At the moment Moldova, Transdniestria, Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe are involved in the five-sided talks on the conflict settlement.

Moscow has assured that Russia will cooperate with Ukraine and the OSCE to settle the crisis and resume five-nation talks. The Russian and Ukrainian Presidents claimed this in Sochi recently.
