MOSCOW, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - The first-ever Day of Charity and Mercy will be marked in the ancient Russian town of Murom to commemorate Righteous St. Juliana of Lazarevo and Murom. Saturday, August 21 marks the 400th anniversary of her death.

"Russia's most ancient monastery, St. Savior and Transfiguration monastery in Murom will be the venue of the holiday," Archbishop Yevlogy of Vladimir and Suzdal told RIA Novosti.

According to him, fifty years ago a communications regiment was stationed at this monastery, which was closed to believers. The regiment was relocated eight years ago, when the monastery celebrated the 900th anniversary of its founding.

The main work on the monastery's restoration will be completed during the celebrations in honor of St. Juliana.

"St. Juliana had a family and many children," Archbishop Yevlogy said. "She was a real Christian, loyal and kind-hearted and secretly helped the sick and starving people."

Tens of thousands of people, including Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexis II, Audit Chamber Chairman Sergei Stepashin and other officials and clergymen, will attend the celebrations in Murom [the chamber has formed a special trustee council for the monastery's restoration].
