This is the name of the unique competition forming part of the festival of Russian films Window to Europe which is being held now at the town of Vyborg in the Leningrad Region (a port on the Gulf of Finland coast which formed part of Finland in 1918-1940 under the name of Viipuri).
All the spectators - professionals and the public at large, the judges, and the guests and participants in the festival - deliver their verdict to the film putting their mark to it after the show.
(The film's plot in the nostalgic tones of a retro-drama or, to be more exact, a melodrama, is simple and unsophisticated. A chap from the lower classes - his part is played by actor Igor Petrenko - goes to the Crimean coast where he becomes the driver of a General - a certain creative success of experienced Ukrainian actor Bogdan Stupka - who is slandered by Stalin officials, and marries his spoilt daughter - actress Alena Babenko).
The Vyborg Account at times brings surprises - for instance, a film, unnoticed by all judges and not marked by any prizes, receives top honors while a famed film - winner of prizes fails to find the public's recognition.
Three films are to be shown within the feature films competition in Vyborg on Sunday. One of them is Evening Bells made by director Vladimir Khotinenko on Pavel Finn's script, which tells of childhood in postwar Moscow. The film is to a certain extent autobiographic for the scriptwriter himself.
Besides that, the film The Night Is Light of Roman Balayan that is a psychological drama based on Alexander Zhovna's short story The Experiment will be shown. The film is about life in a boarding house for blind, deaf and dumb children.
And lastly well-known film Dad by AlexanderMashkov which participated in the recent Moscow international film festival will also be shown. Mr. Mashkov himself will present his new film in Vyborg.
Window to Europe is a festival including, along with the feature films competition, fully valid competitions of animated cartoons and documentary films. Three animated cartoons and three documentary films will be shown within them on Sunday.
