MOSCOW, August 14 (RIA Novosti) - Last midnight the cease-fire agreement between the parties in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict came into effect.

The decision was made at a meeting between co-chairmen of the Joint Control Commission for the Georgian-Ossetian settlement, Irina Gagloeva, chairperson of the Press and Information Committee of South Ossetia (self-proclaimed republic in Georgia), told RIA Novosti on the phone.

"It has been decided to cease fire at August 14 midnight", she said.

The commission's co-chairmen met in Tskhinvali on the Russian initiative.

Georgy Khaindrava, Georgian state minister for separatist conflicts, told RIA Novosti that on Saturday the commission would hold a regular meeting to work out a plan of separating the two opposed power structures.

As regards a possible meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania and South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity, Mr. Khaindrava stressed that Vladimir Chkhishvili, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Georgia, was involved in arranging this meeting.

The Joint Control Commission has been monitoring the situation in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone since 1992. It comprises representatives of Russia, Georgia, South Ossetia and North Ossetia (constituent republic of Russia).

On the opening day of the 28th Olympic Games, a group of Russian Olympic champions urged the conflicting parties to take compassion on their peoples, respect for all the participants in the Olympic Games and their fans world-wide and end hostilities". The appeal, which RIA Novosti received on Friday, is signed by Alexander Karelin, three-time Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling; ice hockey goalkeeper, three Time Olympic champion Vladislav Tretyak; hockey star Vyacheslav Fetisov, two-time Olympic champion; figures-skater Irina Rodnina, 1972 Olympics pairs champion; and other well-known Russian sportsmen.

"We are sure that such a step will provide the good grounds for searching ways towards calm and balanced dialogue in the interests of our peoples aspiring for peace, mutual understanding and a quiet future for the rising generations," the appeal reads.
