GEORGIAN PARLIAMENT CALLS RUSSIA SIDE OF GEORGIAN-OSSETIAN CONFLICT

TBILISI, August 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is a side of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, reads the Georgian parliament's statement.

On Friday Georgian parliamentarians have issued a special statement in view of the recent developments in the Tskhinvali region (the Georgian official name for the self-proclaimed republic of South Ossetia), the press service of the Georgian parliament told Novosti-Georgia agency.

Konstantin Gabashvili, chairman of the foreign relations committee of the Georgian parliament, said that it also demanded to change the mandate of the peacekeeping operation in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone.

"We offer the Georgian executive power a wide choice of actions from ending the mandate to the internationalization of peacekeeping operations", Mr. Gabashvili said.

(In compliance with the Dagomys agreements of 1992, the peacekeeping operation in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone is carried out by 1,500-strong peacekeeping forces made up of Russian, Georgian and Ossetian battalions. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said recently that Georgia may denounce of these agreements.)

Meanwhile, speaker of the Georgian parliament Nino Burdzhanadze is making a trip to the Tskhinvali region to meet with locals and the command of the Russian peacekeepers.

"I am ready to meet with Eduard Kokoity (South Ossetian leader), though he has not yet given his agreement", Ms. Burdzhanadze said.
