DEPUTY KALININGRAD REGION GOVERNOR ARRESTED FOR BRIBETAKING

MOSCOW, August 12 (RIA Novosti) - Deputy Kaliningrad region governor Savva Leonov has been arrested for bribetaking, reports the Russian Prosecutor General's Office press service web site.

According to the press service, earlier he was accused of bribetaking on a large scale.

As deputy regional governor, Leonov simultaneously was chairman of the commission on auctions on quota'ed goods imported to the territory of the Kaliningrad region (Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea). His office duties included appointment of terms to hold bids on sales of quotas on imported cars.

"The investigation established that on August 9, 2004, in ward No. 6 of the Baltic Fleet military hospital, Leonov received $150,000 from a private entrepreneur for making actions in favor of the latter, namely, for appointment of terms to hold an auction on sales of quotas on imported cars at an earlier time," says the statement of the prosecutor's office.

The entrepreneur was accused of giving a bribe to an official. He was taken into custody.
