MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti) - This is Russia's Military Construction Industry Day. The Defence Ministry press service issued a public statement on the occasion. It offers a retrospective of the Russian military construction service and the latest facts and figures.

Army and naval builders are prominent in the Russian Armed Forces, and have been entitled to special attention ever since Peter the Great's reign. The present-day network of military district and fleet construction organisations and their industrial affiliates had taken shape by the start of the 1950s, says the document.

Among the latest finished endeavours the statement mentions a cantonment of the 76th Pskov Airborne Division and a chasseur HQ in Chechnya's Vedeno township.

Three barracks and two residential houses in Khankala-a suburbia of Grozny, Chechen capital-will be commissioned within this year, each building five storeys high. Several barracks for contract soldiers, to accommodate a total 25,700, will be ready for stationary units.

Infrastructural updating and repairs are on in the Central training grounds, Novaya Zemlya islands in the arctic Barents Sea. Construction of Russia's Kant air base in Kyrgyzstan is approaching its finish. Work is underway for the coastal infrastructure of the Black Sea's Novorossiisk naval base, and launching pads for permanent-readiness Topol M missile installations in Tatischevo, Saratov Region on the Volga. The Plesetsk space centre in the Arkhangelsk Region, European Russia's north, will soon receive basic facilities of a new Soyuz rocket launching pad.
