AT EXPO-2005 IN JAPAN

MOSCOW, AUGUST 7 (RIA Novosti) -EXPO-2005 in Japan will showcase Russia's nanotechnology advances (latest molecular-level technologies), Alexander Baraulin of the working group to prepare the Russian exposition has said.

"Nanotechnology has a promising scientific and applied importance. Russia has already made world-class developments of the kind. That is why they have been included in the national exposition", Baraulin said.

Among them are the Nanoscan device for measurements and manipulations at the micro- and nano-levels, versatile scanning research microscope for comprehensive study of polymer, semiconductor and biological objects at top resolution in the air, liquid and gaseous mediums.

"Our visitors will familiarise themselves with basic nanotechnologies of today in the special 'training class' (two to three computer desks). Next to them will be life-size specimens of our developments", Baraulin said.

The world exhibition EXPO-2005 will be held in Aiti on March 25 through September 25 under the watchword Nature Wisdom.

The Russian part of the exhibition will showcase, alongside nanotechnologies, also space technologies, strides made by energy workers, the latest achievements in warning and eliminating the effects of natural calamities and man-caused catastrophes, as well as give an insight into Russia's cultural and natural wealth.

Nanotechnologies can find application in every sector, from aircraft manufacture to the production of clothes and medicinal preparations. They will greatly change the idea of what modern industry can do. The new materials will be hundreds of times stronger than steel and weigh six times less. Their prototypes already exist but their production is too costly.

Still, something is entering everyday life. Say, Japan has begun to make thin-film solar cells. They can cover the surface of automobiles and cellular telephones to make them energy-independent because electricity will arrive from the conversion of sunlight.
