YEREVAN, July 21 (RIA Novosti) - The European Council will consider the report on the security situation in the South Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan).

This is what Mient Jan Faber, EU expert for security, said at his meeting with Arkady Gukasyan, president of the self-proclaimed Nagorny Karabakh republic (an Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan).

According to the main information department of the republic's president, Faber noted he had visited Nagorny Karabakh within his regional visit to South Caucasus countries to study the situation around security.

In his words, the EU is now looking for new ways of solving numerous problems in the countries included in the Wider Europe: New Neighbourhood initiative.

Gukasyan, in turn, noted that representatives of EU structures to Nagorny Karabakh had recently become quite frequent, which testifies above all to the interest of the European community in the early settlement of the Nagorny Karabakh conflict. "Only thorough study of the situation in the conflict zone can spotlight practical ways towards mutually acceptable solution to the problem," said the Nagorny Karabakh president.

Gukasyan noted that Nagorny Karabakh was opened for all those who can help the reform of the Nagorny Karabakh political life, in particular, the development of the free press, and the activity of non-governmental and human rights organizations of the republic.

In his trip, Faber was accompanied by representatives of the Dutch Inter Church Peace Council.
