MOSCOW, July 4 - RIA Novosti. The plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, held right after the party's convention, re-elected Gennady Zyuganov into a new term of the Central Committee chairmanship.

Previously Zyuganov had been elected member of the Central Committee by a secret-ballot majority of 214 against 32.

The convention elected 126 members of the Central Committee, in particular Valentin Kuptsov, Yegor Ligachyov, Anatoly Lukyanov, Ivan Melnikov (later the plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party elected him first deputy chairman of the party), and Vasily Starodubtsev.

The convention lasted until midnight. The party leadership asked all delegates to write statements to the Russian Justice Ministry to confirm that Zyuganov was in charge of the convention.

Zyuganov described that this as a precaution against the 'alternative' Communist convention held simultaneously, should the participants of that event apply to court for recognition of their legitimacy.

The plenary meeting of the Central Committee was conspicuous for unprecedented transparence - reporters were admitted.

The party had suffered secession in two days before the convention. Most members of the previous Central Committee voted to dismiss Zyuganov from chairmanship and elected Ivanovo region Governor Vladimir Tikhonov, 57 into the office. The 'alternative' convention has endorsed Tikhonov's authority.

Now it is up to the Justice Ministry to decide which of the two conventions could be considered legitimate.
