MOSCOW, June 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's consistent support to the IAEA activities was confirmed at Monday talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei.

"The parties stated a high level of interaction in different spheres," reads a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry's information and press department received by RIA Novosti.

The parties emphasized the Agency's crucial role in "strengthening non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, development of international cooperation for peaceful use of atomic energy, ensuring of the necessary level of nuclear and radioactive safety." "Strengthening the Agency's system of guarantees is becoming very important due to new challenges and threats," it was pointed out.

The talks focused on regional problems of nuclear non-proliferation and their settlement.

In the context of Iraq's "nuclear file," the parties talked of the "need to gradually develop cooperation between the IAEA and Iran to resolve the remaining questions concerning its nuclear activities."

The Russian party once again emphasized that solution of the Korean nuclear problem remained a top priority. "We do not see any other alternative to settling the North Korean nuclear problem than to continue the six-sided talks, the third round of which finished on June 25 in Beijing," reads the ministry's release.

Separately, the parties discussed ideas to strengthen the non-proliferation regime, coordinated at the recent G8 summit on Sea Island that are related to the Agency's work.
